What GitHub adds to Git

What GitHub adds to Git

You already know how to make commits and branches locally. GitHub gives a team a shared place to host those objects and coordinate the work around them.

What you’ll learn

  • Explain GitHub's role.
  • Map Git concepts to GitHub workflows.
  • Identify platform-only collaboration features.

From local repository to team platform

  1. Local Git

    Create commits and branches.

    developer history
  2. GitHub remote

    Share branch history.

    hosted repository
  3. Collaboration

    Review, discuss, check and merge.

    pull request

GitHub is a collaboration layer around repositories

A GitHub repository can host Git data and also provide pull requests, reviews, issues, discussions, repository rules, Actions, Pages, releases and other platform features.

Some GitHub actions have direct Git equivalents—creating a branch or commit, for example. Others, such as opening a pull request or assigning an issue, are GitHub-level metadata and workflows.

Map local Git to hosted collaboration

Run this in a disposable practice repository unless the lesson explicitly says otherwise.

# Git still works locally
git status
git log --oneline

# GitHub features are accessed through the website, API, or GitHub CLI (gh)

Your local branch can be pushed to GitHub. A pull request then proposes integrating that branch into another branch and provides a place for review and automated checks.

Practice: What is GitHub?

Your task: Classify these as core Git, GitHub, or both layers working together: commit, branch, remote push, pull request, issue, code review, merge commit.

Common pitfall to avoid

GitHub's browser editor can create commits, but learning local Git remains valuable for real development workflows, conflict resolution, offline history and tooling.

Check your understanding

Which is specifically a GitHub collaboration feature rather than a core Git command?
Choose one answer. You can try again.

Answer and explanation

Pull request.

Correct.

What is GitHub?: what to remember

What GitHub adds to Git is complete when you can explain the state being changed before you run the command, not merely repeat the syntax.
